In the electronic age, it’s easy to forget about using a piece of paper and a pen or pencil. Take that piece of paper out and put on it all the things you’d like to do in the upcoming day. The list doesn’t have to be perfect. It can be all kinds of scribbles and things to do. Then you choose, among all of these things, the one thing that is the most challenging. The one thing that’s most important.

Now look at the list. What is the one thing that you are most likely to put off? What’s your most important thing to do? It doesn’t have to be the most urgent, but the most important? Most people don’t have such a simple system. They just respond to whatever is the most urgent. They never really think much about it. They just go with their feelings. All day long and ask themselves internally, “What do “I Feel” has to be done now?” Many times the urgent things are really small things. They are just little hassles.

So this is why you want to create a category called “Worst First.” You want to pick the one thing that’s hardest to do, that you would love to have finished and behind you. You want to put it number one! Your first priority. Nothing gets done until that gets done. Do the worst first. When you do that, you will feel a surge of energy. Your self-esteem will rise.
